Starfish Story: Zainab Shahid

When I first joined St. Anne’s Primary School, I was allocated to a Year 4 class. The teacher brought to my attention two girls who were underachieving considerably in their maths class. I was requested to focus on these two girls in order to raise their level to the national average. The two girls did not even seem to grasp the concept of basic number bonds up to ten, neither were they fluent when reciting their two times table. I took the two girls out of class and practice basic mental maths with them on a one-to-one basis. I took this task as a great challenge and decided to prepare questions and worksheets that would aid their learning. After two weeks of daily practise, I can proudly say that they now both know their number bonds up to ten off by heart, and are a lot more fluent in their two times table!
