Starfish Story: Latisha Royer

I am currently delivering 1:1 science revision lessons to a Year 9 pupil who is on an isolation programme. This boy is isolated from all other pupils, has had his video games in his home confiscated by the school and has a specialist timetable of 1:1 lessons to catch up on work he has fallen behind on. He also has quite a volatile temper and very little respect for teachers. Last week I found myself having to cover the two lessons after my lesson and during one of these lessons the pupil and I started to talk about what he wanted to be when he was older. He told me he wanted to be an Engineer and so I told him that National Grid are an international electricity and gas company and one of City Year’s sponsors. I told him that National Grid had various routes that would enable him to get into the company – e.g. apprenticeship programmes. National Grid had actually held a session at the CY office last year where they spoke about the different ways people can become a part of the company. I came away feeling very happy that I could pass on City Year links with a pupil and get him excited about the prospect of becoming an Engineer. It seemed to reinforce the ‘double-win’ notion of City Year where both the pupil and the corps member benefit.
