City Year UK supporter wins Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Volunteering Award

We were delighted to learn that Serina Ramkhelawon has won a Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Volunteering Award for her work with City Year UK.

City Year UK responds to the Government’s comprehensive spending review

Today the Chancellor George Osborne announced the details of the comprehensive spending review to Parliament. This lays out the Government’s spending plans for the next five years.   The key issues affecting City Year UK are: National Citizen Service places will be expanded to 300,000, at an estimated annual cost of roughly £1 billion. 26% cuts to the Cabinet Office. This is concerning as this department houses The Office for Civil Society, which is responsible for funding youth social action. Festival of fun: Youngsters discover the lighter side of science

On Friday 20th November, 90 seven to eleven-year-olds from two Islington primary schools enjoyed a fun festival of science and engineering organised by National Grid and City Year UK.  Running since 2011, the festival is designed to spark children’s interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects and demonstrate their relevance to everyday life.

Pupils from Pakemon Primary School and St Marks C of E Primary School attended the festival. Did you know what you wanted to do on leaving school or university and stuck to it? No? You’re not alone. A survey from last year found that only half of all UK graduates work in a field related to their degree, while 96 per cent said they had switched careers by the time they were 24.

City Year UK announces Lord Blunkett as first patron at 5th birthday celebration

As part of our fifth anniversary celebrations we announced Lord Blunkett as our first honorary patron.  The former Home Secretary and Secretary of State for Education and Employment, who has a long-standing interest in youth social action, has been a supporter of City Year UK since it started in 2010.

In a special video message aired during our fifth birthday party, Lord Blunkett enthusiastically thanked the 680 young people who’ve joined City Year UK to date and highlighted that ‘giving and getting’ is what the charity’s year of service is all about.

City Year launches in Greater Manchester

City Year Greater Manchester officially launched yesterday evening at a special event hosted by KPMG.

25 young people have already signed up, starting their ‘year of service’ in four primary and secondary schools with a high proportion of pupils from low income backgrounds.

Sir Howard Bernstein, Chief Executive of Manchester City Council, praised the example and inspiration of corps members and called for businesses to get alongside them and the programme.

Minister joins Generation Change to celebrate youth social action

The Minister for Civil Society, Rob Wilson MP, this week joined City Year UK and members of Generation Change to celebrate and support the power of youth volunteering.

He said: “It’s clear that social action has an important role to play in preparing young people for work, as well as for them to recognise the part they have to play in society.”
