City Year UK announces Lord Blunkett as first patron at 5th birthday celebration

As part of our fifth anniversary celebrations we announced Lord Blunkett as our first honorary patron.  The former Home Secretary and Secretary of State for Education and Employment, who has a long-standing interest in youth social action, has been a supporter of City Year UK since it started in 2010.

In a special video message aired during our fifth birthday party, Lord Blunkett enthusiastically thanked the 680 young people who’ve joined City Year UK to date and highlighted that ‘giving and getting’ is what the charity’s year of service is all about.

City Year launches in Greater Manchester

City Year Greater Manchester officially launched yesterday evening at a special event hosted by KPMG.

25 young people have already signed up, starting their ‘year of service’ in four primary and secondary schools with a high proportion of pupils from low income backgrounds.

Sir Howard Bernstein, Chief Executive of Manchester City Council, praised the example and inspiration of corps members and called for businesses to get alongside them and the programme.

Minister joins Generation Change to celebrate youth social action

The Minister for Civil Society, Rob Wilson MP, this week joined City Year UK and members of Generation Change to celebrate and support the power of youth volunteering.

He said: “It’s clear that social action has an important role to play in preparing young people for work, as well as for them to recognise the part they have to play in society.”
