“The young adults who serve as corps members with City Year London this year will be serving so much more than the children they support every day. They will be contributing to the most important social movement of the next generation.”

Why we are needed in London

London is one of the wealthiest cities on earth, yet some families and individuals who live here are among the poorest in the developed world. The poverty that traps people in this city is not just lack of money, but lack of networks, lack of education, lack of opportunity and lack of aspiration.

City Year London aims to break the cycle of under aspiration and under achievement among children and young people.

    • The UK has a problem with young people not in education, employment and training (NEET)
    • 30,000 sixteen year olds leave school with no qualifications each year
    • Almost 1 million young people are currently unemployed
    • A pupil from a non-deprived background is more than twice as likely to go to university as their deprived peers

Luke’s World

The Private Equity Foundation have recently sponsored ‘Luke’s World’, a film which powerfully reveals the sobering reality for children living in poverty in the UK. This film tells the story of a boy named Luke and some of the challenges he faces growing up with his mother and sister in a London estate. At City Year we believe young people can help transform the lives of children just like Luke.
