Serina Ramkhelawon, Foreign Exchange Sales Product specialist, Bank of America Merrill Lynch went back to school to see the City Year London team – that is sponsored by her firm – in action. Here’s what she had to say about her experience at William Ellis School in Highgate:
“I had the opportunity to speak to some of the young people City Year supports – they clearly value the presence of the volunteers, finding them very approachable and people to whom they can turn when they’re perhaps slightly overwhelmed by school-work. ‘If I don’t understand a subject in the classroom, Miss (City Year) helps me by spending time with me in class’, commented one student.
“William Ellis head teacher, Sam, was also very complimentary about the charity, explaining how City Year’s presence has considerably increased class attendance over the past two years and has also encouraged more boys to attend homework club.
“The City Year volunteers to whom I spoke, were extremely enthusiastic about their role at the school, and all had a smile on their face when talking about helping the young people. They find their volunteering, and particularly the mentoring support, very rewarding as they can really see the difference they make. On the flip side, they too have developed skills, such as leadership, mentoring, communication and listening – attributes which they know will be very useful in their future careers, wherever these may be”.
