The BE Group has named City Year UK’s Chief Executive Kevin Munday one of 39 of the UK’s most inspiring social entrepreneurs.
The UK Social Entrepreneur Index was launched by the BE Group and sponsored by UBS to celebrate entrepreneurs who, like Kevin, exemplify the qualities of social impact, creativity and innovation. BE Group’s commercial director Bryan Hoare hopes that the selected entrepreneurs will “act as beacons of inspiration for others to encompass positive social impact.”
One of the judges of the Index, Paul Skidmore, founder of Rising Academies, said: “With so many inspiring stories to choose from, selecting the social entrepreneurs to join this year’s index was really hard. In the end what set the winning entries apart was not just the clarity of their diagnosis, nor the novelty of their solution, but their proven track record in making things happen even in the face of adversity.”
Kevin told the BE Group that the best thing about being a social entrepreneur is that: “Every day I get to meet and work with amazing young people who remind me that together we can change the world. I love City Year UK because we have the double benefit of doing that in two practical ways – helping both pupils and the 18-25s who mentor them. I also love our team, which is made up of diverse people all united in wanting to help others achieve their full potential.”
His advice to budding social entrepreneurs is to “be clear what you want to achieve and focus relentlessly on doing it. Also, be careful not to scale too quickly. Take the time to get your product right and prove that it has an impact first.”
