City Year London Community Action Day

Venue: Welbourne Primary School, Stainby Road, London, N15 4EA
Description:
Our main goal for the day at Welbourne Primary School is to transform the building in hopes of making it a more functional, beautiful and safe space for the surrounding community to enjoy. The day will include painting and gardening. We are looking for residents of London to attend. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and converse with people from many different backgrounds as well as learning about City Year’s work in schools.
On the day itself, we strongly recommend that you wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. No other preparation is needed and lunch and tools are provided. We only ask that you arrive at the requested time of 9.30 am so you can be appropriately divided into groups before the day gets underway.

Cabinet Office Minister, Francis Maude meets City Year London volunteers
Cabinet Office Minister, Francis Maude today made a special visit to Whitmore Primary School in Hackney to meet City Year volunteers and see firsthand how they are making a big difference at the school.
Mr Maude met Head teacher, Penny Smith and City Year team leader Chilima Sianyeuka for a tour of the school and to observe some of the classes where City Year corps members are supporting teachers and helping children. (more…)
More than 500 young people apply to join City Year
More than 500 young people have now applied to join City Year to ‘give up a year and change the world.’
City Year recruits passionate 18-25 year olds to work on a full time but voluntary basis in inner city schools.
This week we reached a recruitment milestone of having received the 500th application to serve with us.
City Year CEO, Sophie Livingstone said:

City Year London CEO responds to new Govt data on school performance
Following the Government’s release of new data on school performances, which shows that disadvantaged children are half as likely to achieve the national benchmark of five A-C grade GCSE’s, our CEO, Sophie Livingstone, had this to say:
“Too many young people are not receiving enough intensive one-to-one tutoring or mentoring guidance to nudge them back on track. Teachers need extra support so that they can really focus on those young people that have slipped behind. Everyone has the potential to succeed in their exams but some young people need more personalised help and positive role models to keep reminding them of the importance of doing well at school”.

Mr Maude listened to pupils about how they enjoy learning with corps members and he also held a roundtable discussion with the National Grid sponsored team members to hear about their experiences working with the children. The visit follows a recent trip to the US where Francis Maude met volunteers working in City Year’s New York site. (more…)
