New year, new school: City Year London starts service in Shacklewell Primary School, Hackney

On 10 January 2011 a new team of City Year London corps members started serving in our sixth partner school, Shacklewell Primary School. City Year London now has three partner schools in Hackney.
Fifteen new corps members joined us after the winter holidays, with ten forming the Power team at Shacklewell and the rest joining our existing school teams. (more…)

City Year London CEO responds to ICM poll on young ‘animals’

A new Barnardo’s poll discovers that 49% of UK population agree that children today are beginning to behave like animals.
Commenting on the poll, our Chief Executive of City Year London, Sophie Livingstone, said:
“This paints a depressing picture of the divide between young people and adults. From our experience, there are thousands of positive young people that want to serve their community and engage in projects such as City Year London, despite all the challenges they face growing up today. We all need to work together to support young people who want to break down these negative stereotypes and who are working hard in difficult circumstances to fulfil their potential.”

The independent think tank, the Centre for Social Justice, today published research into school exclusions called No Excuses: A Review of Educational Exclusion. The report features a City Year London case study showing how our corps member volunteers are supporting children by being positive role models, mentors and helping children being ‘ready to learn’. City Year London Graduation 2010/11

On 30 June we celebrated the graduation of our 2010/11 corps at the British Museum in an event sponsored by Barclays Capital. City year’s corps members have spent over 65,000 hours volunteering to support children, schools and communities across London, and they have worked with more than 2,000 children in classrooms, playgrounds and after school clubs.
