Aishat Omodayo, City Year London, 2014-15
“I joined City Year London after being drawn in by the red jackets at a graduate recruitment fair and listening to the inspiring testimonials of the corps members. Being able to relate to children who attend a school with many disadvantaged children was my unique selling point. Having attended an inner-city London school myself and been successful in education, my objective was to show them that success does not discriminate.
“My favourite thing about being a corps member is the fact that I assist in bridging the gap in student-teacher relationships. I feel lucky that I have been able to use my degree and passion for mathematics to help students. A particular highlight has been witnessing my year 11 focus child gradually progress from a C grade to a B grade and hopefully an A grade in maths.
“I hope to enter the corporate world after my City Year and have gained transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, resilience and leadership, as well as developing my soft skills. I consider it a privilege that we have access to a mentor to help guide us and the weekly training has opened up several opportunities to meet, gain insights from and network with industry professionals”.
