Connor Hannon, City Year Greater Manchester

Connon_headshot“City Year prides itself on being diverse and inclusive and one way in which it achieves this is by recruiting people from all different backgrounds. We all have the same goal of wanting to make positive changes in our society, work as a team and become great friends which provides a healthy environment rooted in City Year culture.

“I’ve always been the sort of person who strives for social change but City Year has empowered me by making me more confident; confident enough to speak out and confident to know I can make a difference. I feel like I’ve got a greater voice now because I’ve got a greater platform, as City Year provides the opportunity to speak out against inequalities and make a change if you’re willing. The type of volunteering we do is very inspiring because you can physically see the difference you make to the students you help, which is incredibly rewarding.

“I joined City Year because I felt like the education system is failing pupils, making them into test takers and not teaching content of practical use. I joined to positively change the lives of young adults and make a real difference in my community. I also joined for my own personal development, to help with my confidence and teamwork skills.

“In the future I hope to move onto further education studying as a journalist. I believe City Year has provided me with the tools I need to succeed.”
