Annual City Year Football Championship brings pupils together

City Year UK volunteers recently organised our annual City Year Football Championships in London and Birmingham

Over 300 people attended the London event, which included nearly 200 pupils from 12 of our partner schools and was sponsored by London City Airport. In Birmingham there were over 220 attendees, including over 70 pupils and five schools.

In Birmingham, Street League (the nationalCYC_collage sport for employability charity) engaged the pupils in drills, penalty shoot outs and other football-related activities. In London, Chipotle donated burritos which were thoroughly enjoyed by all. There was even a match played between City Year alumni and current volunteers, with the alumni team winning 1:0.

Pupils were overwhelmingly positive about the tournament, with many already thinking about signing up for next year: “Today was amazing and I’d love to do it again” (Ridwaan, 8).

Jide, 12, commented that “the tournament has built my self-esteem”, while Paula, 15, said “I’ve made great friends here and it’s a great event.” Charlotte, 9, summed up the day: “’It was really cool. I love everything about City Year’.
