Wishing corps members a Happy New City Year!

160 talented and inspirational young people from across the country have embarked on a ‘City Year’ this week, serving for the next 11 months in 24 inner-city schools as role models, mentors and tutors.

Volunteering full-time Monday to Thursday they’ll play a crucial role supporting thousands of pupils in and out of the classroom, helping them to enjoy and make the most of their education.

In return, the 18-24 year olds, known as corps members, will be given personal, professional and leadership development opportunities, with a training and careers programme run every Friday in conjunction with corporate supporters.

City Year UK corps member represents voice of young Londoners at St Paul’s Memorial Service

On 7th July our thoughts went out to all those affected by the London bombings in 2005. We were very proud of corps member Aaron Grant-Booker who represented the voice of young Londoners at the special memorial service at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Aaron spoke about London as “an international cross roads of diversity and ingenuity, tolerance and respect, challenge and opportunity.” He continued “When four bombs exploded on 7 July 2005, lives were destroyed and the flame of hope faltered for what seemed like an eternal moment. For many people, nothing was the same again and yet everything was the … Read more ›

Serina Ramkhelawon, Foreign Exchange Sales Product specialist, Bank of America Merrill Lynch went back to school to see the City Year London team – that is sponsored by her firm – in action. Here’s what she had to say about her experience at William Ellis School in Highgate:

“I had the opportunity to speak to some of the young people City Year supports – they clearly value the presence of the volunteers, finding them very approachable and people to whom they can turn when they’re perhaps slightly overwhelmed by school-work. ‘If I don’t understand a subject in the classroom, Miss … Read more ›
