City Year UK brought together volunteer mentors, staff, alumni and supporters for a Service Day on Saturday the 2nd of March.
Together, we transformed an outdoor space in South London into a vibrant garden for Conisborough College to enjoy! The team renovated the school’s memorial garden and created a sustainable sensory garden. This included several sustainability based projects ranging from creating a plastic bottle hanging herb garden, bug hotel to a hedgehog house.
The revamped garden gives pupils the opportunity to engage with nature, have a space to relax, and feel more positive about their school environment. Pupils from the school’s SEN department can also take advantage of the sensory garden, bug hotel and planting areas to learn more about the world around them within a safe and peaceful environment.
One Conisborough College pupil told City Year UK that “the garden makes me feel relaxed, and I like sitting on the new benches”, and another told us that “I like looking at the plants and the bug hotel- there is always something growing or moving!”
Will Conn, the school’s Assistant Head at Conisborough, stated that “we are very grateful to City Year and their volunteers for their Service Day at Conisborough College, where they gave up a Saturday to make over the front garden space of our school. This new space will be used by the Progress Unit, who I am sure will enjoy the sensory garden, bug hotel and memorial spaces, and we look forward to seeing how it all grows!”
As a youth social action charity, City Year UK aims to encourage community service in all forms – inside and outside the classroom!
