City Year UK believes that young people can change the world.
Whether you’re a graduate, a placement year student or you’ve just left school, there are so many reasons why young people join City Year UK and have the best year of their life. Don’t just take our word for it, here’s what our current volunteers, schools and your potential future employers say.
MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE TO CHILDREN’S LIVES
At the heart of our mission is the desire to tackle educational inequality in the UK. You’ll support pupils growing up in disadvantaged communities to believe in themselves and make the most of their education. You’ll be a mentor, a tutor and a role model to children who need it most, helping to create an environment where they can enjoy school and learning.
DEVELOP LEADERSHIP SKILLS
City Year UK is a leadership development programme and we take the personal and professional development of our volunteer mentors very seriously. We give you your own tailored personal development plan which is designed to help you hone the key skills and competencies that will stand you in good stead for life – things like planning and organisation, communication, problem-solving, project management, resilience and self-awareness. At the end of the year you’ll have a clearer sense of where you want to get to in life and the skills you’ll need to get there.
BOOST YOUR CAREER PROSPECTS
If you’ve already got your career mapped out, City Year will help you hone the skills that employers are looking for. If you’re not sure what you want to do, we’ll open your eyes to a multitude of different sectors and career paths. As well as CV and interview guidance, you’ll get the chance to gain practical work experience and work shadowing opportunities and benefit from your own mentor who will help support your plans after City Year.
GAIN FRIENDS AND NETWORKS FOR LIFE
Serving in a team in school, you’ll build lasting friendships and a real sense of community with a like-minded but diverse group of people from all walks of life. You will have a lot of fun, share a lot of laughs and benefit from City Year’s supportive culture and caring environment.
City Year is an experience unlike any other. Our young people have met presidents and prime ministers, appeared on Sky TV and on stage at the Albert Hall. They’ve organised talent shows and football tournaments and gained work experience at top UK brands. It’s amazing how much fun you can have outside your comfort zone.
