National Grid

National Grid has supported City Year UK since 2010 and we are incredibly grateful that they continue to be a dedicated and key part of our story and impact. Whether through supporting a team of volunteers in London, running leadership development opportunities for volunteer mentors, or engaging over 30,000 students in science through their ‘School Power’ STEM programme, National Grid has been crucial to our success.

National Grid has played a pivotal role in providing corporate mentors to our volunteers in Birmingham, London and Manchester and numerous members of staff have helped deliver skills-based training sessions. National Grid’s senior managers have also supported the whole organisation’s strategy and development by giving their time and expertise and joining City Year UK committees.

During the past year, our partnership was strengthened further when we were selected as National Grid’s Charity of the Year partner for 2019/20. Through fundraising employees raised an amazing £150,000 towards improving our recruitment strategy to enable us to reach even more inspirational young people, dedicated to changing their local communities.

“We have had a long-term partnership with City Year UK, initially supporting their work in London which ran alongside a major project we were undertaking to rewire the capital and power the city’s future growth. Over the years our employees have really embraced City Year UK and what they stand for by becoming mentors to volunteer mentors. Each year, employees have given their time, advice and expertise to support City Year’s young people take their next step into employment.

Our aim is to help young people develop essential skills as they prepare for their future careers and through the volunteer mentors, we will help provide critical STEM support for pupils in partner schools at a time when learning loss is acute. City Year UK makes a real positive difference to the young people who undertake a year of service and to the students in the schools they support.”
