Hassain Choudhury, 2010/11 corps member

My name is Hassain Choudhury and during my ten months volunteering with City Year London I proudly served on the Aramark Civic Engagement team. My time as a corps member was an invaluable experience, which tested my abilities for the better. I believe we collectively made a difference to the lives of children and made a lasting impact on the communities we served. I will forever be proud of what my peers and I achieved during these ten months.

Upon leaving City Year London I travelled to Uganda for a three-month internship funded by the Department for International Development. I was a team leader in building the organisational capacity of Ugandan Civil Society Organisations (CSO). The aim of my job was to empower young people to make improved decisions through integrated peer education on livelihoods, sexual and reproductive health, life skills, and helping young people to play a leading role in Uganda’s development. The 10 months in which I volunteered at City Year London was not only the most enjoyable time in my young life but also for me the most important. The skills and qualities that I gained through City Year have already helped me to secure my place at Gloucester University, where I am currently working towards a degree in Sport Development. For the summer of 2012 I plan to go to America where I will be working for Camp Counsellors USA.  There I will be working with children and continuing to develop my skills in new environments. The experience I gained as a volunteer in the red jacket has already proven to be an invaluable part of my CV as it has given me all the necessary skills I need to succeed in the next stage of my life. Rodney Williams, 2010/11 Team Leader

Having had an amazing 12 months with City Year, I’ve now started my career with National Grid. I am currently working in the UK Construction department as a Project Officer. I’m based on the London Cable Tunnels Project. I heard so much about this project whilst I was a corps member with the National Grid team which served at Whitmore Primary School, so being able to work on it – and to see how important it is to the city – is just fantastic.

Over the next few years demand for electricity is set to increase, particularly in cities such as London. As the owner of the high-voltage electricity transmission system, National Grid has to deal with this challenge. A solution to this involves reinforcing and refurbishing the current electricity infrastructure. The London Cable Tunnels Project aims to do this by creating underground tunnels that will carry new 400 kV cables. These will connect National Grid’s existing substations at Wimbledon, St John’s Wood, Willesden and Hackney. Read More »
