Our culture and values
In Britain, in America and in South Africa, City Year was founded with a core belief: that uniting and empowering diverse teams of young people to address some of our most difficult challenges can change the world for the better.
City Year believes in being idealistic. Everyday, we see the difference young people make when they act on their idealism - to lead and connect society through their energy, commitment and inspiration.
Our organisational values are deeply rooted in our commitment to diversity, belonging, inclusion and equity (DBIE). Inclusivity involves more than the celebration of diversity. It means actively embracing difference as vital to a rich community and ensuring that people with different identities feel welcome, valued, empowered and engaged.
Our culture and values unite our movement:
RESPONSIBILITY: We are the change we wish to see in society.
INCLUSION: We unite from all backgrounds to serve a cause greater than ourselves.
PROGRESSION: We are dedicated to the development of all.
ACTION: We don’t just talk, we do.
EXCELLENCE: We strive for nothing less, no matter where we start.
“City Year provides a positive culture that promotes equality, fairness and respect, as well as a strong sense of community that is both supportive and nurturing. Everyone involved has a sense of unity and a shared purpose of tackling educational inequality.”
