What schools see in City Year UK

A City Year UK team of inspirational young people represents a considerable and unique extra resource to schools. As ‘near peer’ role models and tutors, our volunteer mentors complement the work of teachers and become an integral and flexible part of everyday school life.

Inspiration and aspiration

Our young people have time to build trust with individual pupils - to coach them and to show them what they are capable of. However, they also embody our culture, which aims to bring joy to learning and inspire high aspirations and standards across the whole school.

“Even though Miss is my mentor, she is like a friend too, because of how much she is there for me and supports me. In high school I haven’t really made people proud, but since meeting Miss, she’s one of the people I want to make proud, because when people didn’t believe in me, she did."

A recruitment pipeline

About a third of our volunteer mentors go on to work in education – either as trainee teachers, teaching assistants or pastoral support workers. 10% of our alumni are employed by a City Year UK partner school, and for some partners we provide a vital pipeline to fill staff vacancies.

A tailored model

Although we have a distinct model, informed by our research and experience in both the US and the UK, we work closely with our partner schools to ensure it's tailored to meet each school's individual needs, every day, for a whole year.
