Youth Matters: Reflections on the new National Youth Strategy

“The emphasis on early support and prevention really stands out. It reflects what we see every day as mentors – investing in young people early creates stronger, lasting outcomes.”
– Ayeza Fatima (18), City Year Mentor, Greater Manchester

City Year UK’s young mentors and staff warmly welcome the new 10-year National Youth Strategy from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, which rightly places young people at the centre and responds to their real, day-to-day needs.

As a youth and education charity tackling educational inequality through full-time mentoring in schools, we see firsthand the difference a trusted adult can make. Having someone outside of home who listens, believes in you, and champions your potential can be transformative – in the classroom and far beyond.

We’re excited by the strategy’s commitment to expanding access to trusted adults, youth hubs and enriching opportunities, and we’re ready to play our part in turning this ambitious vision into action. Keeping young people at the heart of delivery will be essential to ensuring it achieves real, lasting change.
