The City Year West Midlands experience

City Year West Midlands is as diverse as the broad region we cover. Including Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry and Sandwell, we believe in going the extra mile - to build an inclusive, supportive community, united in our commitment to tackling educational inequality.

Could you be a City Year Mentor?

As a role model, mentor and tutor you’ll be an integral part of the school day - in the classroom, playground, corridors and at breakfast and after-school clubs, four days a week, for an academic year. The fifth day is dedicated to the training you’ll need for your role in school and your own personal and professional development.

The challenge

City Year West Midlands is a big commitment but it’s also a rewarding one. We, and the team you’ll volunteer alongside, are here to support you and your well being, so that you can give it your best shot. Here are our top three tips for making the most of your year: 1. What you put in is what you’ll get out. 2. Find your why. Always know your purpose. 3. Prioritise the J Factor. Look for the joy in all you do!

“City Year is a family and I feel very comfortable with the group I’m in. I use the training sessions and team times to reflect and learn from others’ experiences and to have a great laugh with everyone.”

City Year Mentor West Midlands

Your development

Your leadership and development day will take place on either a Friday or Monday, depending on which area you’re in, but the aim is the same - to give you the skills you’ll need in school and in your life and career after City Year. Each of our City Year Mentors also has their own mentor - whose professional background means they can help with everything from CV writing and interview preparation to offering advice as you plan your future.

Benefits and expenses

During your City Year in the West Midlands you’ll receive £115 living expenses a week, your uniform and all travel expenses reimbursed. If you’re completing City Year as a university placement year, you’re still able to claim student finance. Please contact your university or Student Finance for more information. Other useful resources, including information on Housing Benefits and Council Tax Reduction, can be found at Volunteer England and the Citizens Advice Bureau.
