City Year partners with TCS for GoIT App Challenge
City Year has proudly partnered with Tata Consultancy Services as their Charity of the Year. Together, we are working to promote wellbeing and healthy lifestyles among young people and school-aged children through a range of activities, including the TCS Mini London Marathon on 22 April 2023.
For the past six weeks, pupil teams from six UK schools have been taking part in the TCS GoIT App Challenge, where students were tasked with creating an app that promoted fitness, wellbeing, and self-care.
Over the course of the programme, the pupils–with help from City Year UK Volunteer Mentors–followed several TCS-created resources which guided them through the basics of app design and development, from considering interfaces and user experience (UI and UX) to storyboarding, and then pitching their ideas.
We had a chance to celebrate the students’ work during a culmination event on 28 March 2023, where each team of pupils pitched their app to a panel of industry expert judges. The creativity and presentation skills of the students was exceptional, and all the judges were impressed with their designs and ideas.
Of course, a winner had to be chosen and the judges selected Team EHL from Perryfields Academy in Birmingham. Joint second place went to Team Capybara from Leytonstone School in East London and Team Magpies from Oasis Academy Coulsdon.
The City Year UK team wants to extend our thanks to TCS for leading this project. We also want to highlight the amazing efforts of our Volunteer Mentors who delivered the sessions to pupils and championed their work: thanks to Dimitra Zenetzi, Joe Wallington, James Pennington, Nazia Mustafa, Titanilla Bodi, and Maria Jesus Nisona Lola.
Here’s a few excerpts from some of the team’s presentation:
Team EHL, Perryfields Academy (Winners)
